Few words about the history of Lavochkin La-5 fighter.

The La-5 fighter was developed at Lavochkin Design Bureau in spring of 1942. It was equipped with air-cooled Shvetsov M-82 engine. The M-82 engine had much more power than the M105P, this is why La-5 had better performance than its predecessor LaGG-3 did: its speed and rate of climb increased significantly, vertical maneuverability was improved. The first production La-5 aircraft had arrived in Stalingrad at the end of 1942. The survivorship of the M-82 engine was better compared to water-cooled engines, also it provided better front hemisphere protection for pilot. The improved aircraft version was equipped with the more powerful M-82F engine was designated as the La-5F. The La-5F deliveries began from the spring 1943.

Later in 1943 production of the most perfect version of the La-5 called La-5FN began.  It had less structural weight, more powerful M-82FN engine and better aerodynamics based on the extensive wind tunnel testing. The La-5FN was one of the easiest to control fighters, it was excellent in a steep turn and had exceptionally good maneuverability. Combat history of the La-5FN began in summer 1943 from Kursk. In 1943 the La-5FN became the best fighter at the Eastern front. The total number of 10000 La-5 planes were built.
