The La-5 fighter was
developed at Lavochkin Design Bureau in spring of 1942. It was equipped
with
air-cooled Shvetsov M-82 engine. The M-82 engine had much more power
than the
M105P, this is why La-5 had better performance than its predecessor
LaGG-3 did:
its speed and rate of climb increased significantly, vertical
maneuverability
was improved. The first production La-5 aircraft had arrived in Later
in 1943
production of the most perfect version of the La-5 called La-5FN began. It had less structural weight, more powerful
M-82FN engine and better aerodynamics based on the extensive wind
tunnel
testing. The La-5FN was one of the easiest to control fighters, it was
excellent in a steep turn and had exceptionally good maneuverability.
Combat
history of the La-5FN began in summer 1943 from Kursk |
