In total there were 10292 planes manufactured from 1934 until 1942. Removed from operation in 1943. First versions were equipped with 480hp M-22 engine, latest versions had either 1000hp M-62 engine or 1100hp M-63. It was the first Soviet monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear. | Polikarpov PO-2/U-2, Scale 1:20 (550 mm wing span, 410 mm length) | |||||
|
|
The U-2 (later designation PO-2) was designed in 1927 as a trainer biplane. The first PO-2 prototype flew in 1928. The U-2 was used as night bomber during WWII and even during Korean war. Low power, low speed and lack of armor were combined with extreme maneuverability, low weight, high lift and silent engine. During night raids it was approaching target with its engine "off" re-starting it after the attack. Equipped with single 100hp M-11 engine. Production was stopped in 1953. Over 33000 planes were built. |
